Updated at: 1530 PST,  Tuesday, January 04, 2011
Onion, tomato down in Karachi market KARACHI: The prices of onion and tomato began to scale down in vegetable market here, as onion wholesale price came to Rs. 30/kg level.

Talking to Geo News, President Karachi Vegetable Market Association Haji Shahjahan said onion was cultivated late in Sindh’s flood-hit areas, where the yield is now already on the way, pushing onion’s wholesale price down to Rs. 30 from 45 per kilogram at market here.

Similarly, tomato edged down Rs.40 to 50/kg, which was earlier sold at Rs. 80.

According to vegetable traders, nearly one lakh tonnes of onion were exported to Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka at $600/ tonne, entailing the country huge foreign exchange.

According to traders, the prices are expected to slump even more in days to come.
