Floods in Russia kill seven, 7 missing

Updated at: 1911 PST,  Saturday, October 16, 2010
MOSCOW: Flooding in the southern Russian region of Krasnodar killed seven people and seven are missing, a local Emergencies Ministry official said on Saturday.

Heavy rain in the mountainous area caused rivers to overflow, flooding 24 villages, a local news agency reported.

"We can confirm there are seven dead and seven missing, but the death toll may increase," said the official.

Another news agency said nine people had died since Friday.

The rains had subsided by Saturday in the mainly agricultural region, 1,500 km (930 miles) south of Moscow.

Local authorities had evacuated 280 people from the area, the Emergencies Ministry said on its website.

President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the Regional Development Ministry to estimate the scope of the disaster and provide aid to the victims, his spokeswoman Natalia Timakova said.
