Updated at: 0634 PST,  Sunday, October 18, 2009
Malik announces formation of anti-terrorism VSTF ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Rehman Malik has announced to launch a Volunteer Student Task Force (VSTF) with slogan of “Terrorism Free Pakistan” at a high-level meeting held in the ministry on Saturday, the Interior Ministry said.

The minister, while explaining the VSTF formation, said such volunteers would be required to register with their respective police stations.

Malik said three-day orientation training would be given to them in their respective educational institutions, which would be followed by grant of an appropriate certificate.

Rehman Malik was presiding over a meeting to review the security of Islamabad in the Ministry of Interior.

The minister expressed his satisfaction over the recent operations by the Islamabad Police in which the police intercepted a number of potential terrorists before they could commit acts of terrorism.

He directed that all security elements deployed in Islamabad should remain vigilant and launch community policing by maintaining close liaison with the local populace to ensure that their security concerns were being addressed and the police were getting benefits from their cooperation in nabbing the suspects.

He thanked the public for extending cooperation by providing voluntary information on suspects due to which evil designs of terrorists were successfully foiled. He cautioned the public that they should remain alert and immediately report any suspicious activity to the police.

Citing some recent incidents in which miscreants had hired houses, he reiterated the need for the owners for reporting to the nearest police stations about the tenants of respective property so that no miscreant might be able to deceive the owner and use his property for terrorism.

He also announced a reward of Rs 500,000 to citizens who would provide video or photograph captured by video equipment or cellular phones which might lead to the arrest or detection of any act of terror or heinous crime.

Terming this incentive “National Volunteer Video Policing”, he added that persons eligible for the reward would also be offered a job in the local police or the FIA. They would also be given preference if they had applied for any government job.
