18 dead in fiery Mexico bus crash

Updated at: 1808 PST,  Monday, October 18, 2010
MEXICO CITY: At least 18 people were killed Monday when a passenger bus flipped over and burst into flames in central Mexico, burning to death many of the passengers inside, local authorities said.

"A passenger bus overturned over and 18 people burned to death in the municipality of Marques," said an official from the public security secretariat of Queretaro state.

The bus had departed Mexico City bound for the state of Zacatecas, about 600 kilometers (375 miles) to the north.

Local news reports said the accident occurred when the bus crashed into a truck carrying chemicals, triggering the blaze, although the officials would not confirm the reports.
