| GEO Pakistan | | Pakistan court extends detention of US citizen | Updated at: 2202 PST, Monday, October 20, 2008 PESHAWAR: A Pakistani court has extended the detention of a US national for another two weeks after he tried to enter a restive tribal district bordering Afghanistan, officials said Monday.
Jawad Ali also known as Jude Kenan, an American of Pakistani origin, was arrested on October 13 trying to enter Mohmand tribal district, a region known to be a hub of Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants.
Mohammad Ghias, the judge at a court in the northwestern town of Charsadda, ordered Ali be held till November 3, a court official told a foreign agency.
Ali's lawyer told reporters in Charsadda that his client had committed no crime and was being detained unlawfully.
"We will fight the legal battle for his release, as he is innocent and was just curious to see Mohmand tribal area, that is why he had a map of Mohmand with him," lawyer Iwaz Khan said.
The US State Department Wednesday said that consular officials had met with the man. | |
