Obama to pause campaign to visit ailing grandmother
Updated at: 0710 PST,  Tuesday, October 21, 2008
Obama to pause campaign to visit ailing grandmother WEST PALM BEACH: Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama will leave the campaign trail for one full day later this week to visit his 86-year-old grandmother in Hawaii who is very ill, his campaign said Monday.

Senior advisor Robert Gibbs announced the change of schedule on Obama's plane during a campaign swing in Florida.

"In the last few weeks her health has deteriorated to the point where her situation is very serious," Gibbs said of Madelyn Dunham, who was instrumental in helping raise Obama.

"It is for that reason Senator Obama has decided to change his schedule on Thursday and Friday so that he can see her and spend some time with her. He will be returning to the campaign trail on Saturday."
