Suicide attack sinks Sri Lankan merchant ship: defence official
Updated at: 0724 PST,  Wednesday, October 22, 2008
COLOMBO: Tamil Tiger rebels sank a merchant ship in a suicide attack off Sri Lanka's northern peninsula of Jaffna early Wednesday, a defence official said.

He said rebels from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rammed an explosives-laden boat into the vessel, which was carrying essential supplies, just outside the port of Kankesanthurai.

The number of casualties was not immediately clear. The official said that a second ship in the area was also under attack by the Tigers, who are facing a major military ground offensive in the northern mainland of Sri Lanka.
