MOHALI: India's Zaheer Khan was Tuesday fined 80 percent of his match fees following a heated on-field clash with Australia's Matthew Hayden during the second Test here.
Khan, 30, was hauled up by match referee Chris Broad after exchanging words with Hayden and pointing him to the pavilion when the opening batsman was dismissed by Harbhajan Singh on Monday afternoon.
Hayden had complained to on-field umpire Rudi Koertzen, who was standing at square leg, when he left the ground after being trapped leg before by Singh for 29 in the over before lunch.
Khan pleaded guilty to a Level 2 charge under the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Code of Conduct which states that players "shall conduct play within the spirit of the game," an ICC release said.
"Clearly, this sort of behaviour is not acceptable at any level of cricket," Englishman Broad was quoted as saying in the release.
"It showed a lack of respect for the player who had been dismissed. Respect for the opposition was something that we talked about in the pre-series meeting I had with both captains and so it was disappointing that Zaheer behaved in this way.
"However, in considering the penalty, I took into account the fact that Zaheer had a good disciplinary record.
"He also pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and was very apologetic while also promising not to repeat the offence." Khan stands to lose approximately 3,000 dollars for the offence.
The incident came after Hayden and Singh clashed during India's tour of Australia this year, when the Australian described the spinner as an "obnoxious weed." Singh later called Hayden a "big liar." |  |
