Dow index ends up 2 pct in volatile trade
Updated at: 0217 PST,  Friday, October 24, 2008
NEW YORK: Wall Street's blue-chip index gained some 2.0 percent Thursday in a volatile session marked by investor jitters on recession and some sense that the market may have hit bottom.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, which saw wild swings during the session, rose 173.79 points (2.04 percent) to 8,693.00 at the closing bell.

The tech-dominated Nasdaq composite however closed down 11.84 points (0.73 percent) at 1,603.91 while the broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 11.76 points (1.31 percent) to a preliminary close of 908.54.
