 SAINT PETERSBURG: Andy Murray, top seed and defending champion of the one-million-dollar ATP event Saint Petersburg Open Tennis tournament, breezed into the last eight past Ernests Gulbis of Latvia here on Thursday.
The 21-year-old Murray, the world number four, won 6-4, 6-2 in one hour one
minute to record his second win over Gulbis in as many meetings.
Both players held serve until the eighth game, when Murray, fresh from his success at the Madrid Masters last weekend, broke.
Latvia's 20-year-old broke back immediately but Murray produced another break to take the set in 32 minutes.
In the second, Murray underlined his supremacy producing two more breaks to win the set and the match to enter his season's 10th quarter-final.
In a showdown for a place in the last four Murray will meet Serbia's Janko
Tipsarevic, who ousted Jeremy Chardy of France in straight sets 6-4, 7-6 (7/3).
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan qualifier Andrey Golubev upset the local crowd's favourite Marat Safin, two-time champion here (2000-01), winning 6-4, 6-2 to reach his first quarter-final.
The 21-year-old Golubev broke twice for a one-set lead in 43 minutes, while eight seed Safin managed to reply only on one occasion.
In the second set Safin, who is currently 31st in the ATP rankings, continuted allowed his unheralded opponent to break twice again to win the set and the match in one hour 11 minutes.
Golubev will now face Mischa Zverev of Germany, who upset another Russian Mikhail Youzhny, seeded fourth, 7-5, 6-4. |  |
