BANGKOK: Asian markets gained modestly in the wake of Wall Street's overnight surge as investors nibbled on beaten-down shares and global leaders gathered in Washington todiscuss ways to tackle the global financial crisis.

Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 stock average jumped 300.38 points, or 3.7 percent, to 8,539.02 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng was up 461.76points, or 3.5 percent, to 13,681.10 points.

Markets in Australia, mainland China, South Korea and Singapore posted smaller gains in the 1-2 percent range.
