RAWALPINDI: Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain has extended brotherly advice to President Asif Ali Zardari to transfer powers to parliament in the interest of the people and the country, Geo news reported on Wednesday.
Talking to a private TV channel on Wednesday, he said he gave up the MQM leadership in 1992 for the people’s sake and President Zardari should follow in his footsteps.
At that time, he said, he was offered by the military leadership that the operation against the MQM would be stopped and arrested party workers would be released gradually if he (Altaf) stepped down as MQM chief.
He said he did not make it an issue, resigned from the party leadership and transferred all powers to Chairman Azim Ahmad Tariq. He said as a representative of 170 million people, he would advise Zardari to transfer powers to parliament.
He said except for a few clauses, the 17th Amendment and Article 52-2B should be abolished.
He said he wanted the system to continue and democracy to be strengthened. He stressed the need for boosting the morale of the armed forces that are sacrificing their lives in the war against terrorists. | |
