 President, PM hold important meetings
Updated at: 2058 PST,  Monday, December 22, 2008
President, PM hold important meetings ISLAMABAD: Important meetings of the country’s leaders are being held in the capital city to discuss the developing situation as relations between Pakistan and India have become tensed.

Chief of the Army Staff, General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani met with President Asif Ali Zardari on Monday.

During meeting the president reiterated that no compromise will be acceptable on the country’s defence and security and that the armed forces of Pakistan do possess the capacity to safeguard the borders of our homeland.

The Army Chief briefed the President about the security matters.

President Zardari said Pakistan had offered every possible cooperation to India following the Mumbai attacks but Indian attitude remained discouraging as they leveled allegations without providing any concrete evidence. This has put the region’s peace in jeopardy, he added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan High Commissioner in India, Shahid Malik called on Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

The Prime Minister said Pakistan’s desire for peace must not be construed as its weakness.

Shahid Malik briefed the Prime Minister on the developments that took place after the Mumbai attacks.

“Pakistan is a peace loving country but if war is thrust upon us then the entire nation is united as one and that the country’s armed forces are well prepared to secure our bordres,” the PM said.
