MARDAN: A teenage suicide bomber killed 20 army personnel at a parade ground on Thursday, and left 20 others injured, ISPR said in a press release.
Dressed in school uniform, the teenager walked up to the parade inside a heavily guarded area in the town of Mardan, where there is also a school, and blew himself up killing the soldiers with shrapnel and explosives, officials said.
It was the deadliest suicide bombing in Pakistan since a woman with a bomb strapped under her burqa killed 43 people at a UN food distribution point on Christmas Day 2010 in the tribal district of Bajaur.
"In a suicide attack by a boy in school uniform in Punjab Regimental Centre, Mardan early morning today, 20 persons embraced martyrdom while 20 were injured," the ISPR said in a brief message to reporters.
"The security officials in the Regimental Centre were carrying out their routine parade at the time of suicide attack. The injured were immediately rushed to the CMH for medical treatment." |
