UNITED NATIONS: Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said Thursday that it was up to the Egyptian people to decide their future after President Hosni Mubarak's statement that he would stay in power.
"It is up to the Egyptian people to find a way and to do it according to their own constitution, norms and practices," Barak told reporters after a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
"I think we should not pretend that we are more important for the Egyptian people than their own interests. I don't think I have to respond on this," he said.
Barak and Ban Ki-moon held their meeting as Egypt's president gave a speech in which he said he would hand over some powers to his vice president but would not give in to popular calls to stand down. |
