NATO expresses concern over Swat Shariah treaty
Updated at: 1801 PST,  Tuesday, February 17, 2009
BRUSSELS: NATO on Tuesday expressed concern after the NWFP government signed a pact with Sufi Muhammad, chief of TNSM, to introduce Islamic law in the northwestern Swat valley in a bid to take the steam out of a Taliban uprising there.

"We would all be concerned by a situation in which extremists would have safe haven," NATO spokesman James Appathurai told a news briefing. "It is certainly reason for
concern."

NATO heads an international force battling Taliban militants in Pakistan's neighbour Afghanistan.
