SHC orders removal of Hakim Akhtar’s name from ECL
Updated at: 0109 PST,  Wednesday, February 18, 2009
SHC orders removal of Hakim Akhtar’s name from ECL KARACHI: The Sindh High Court on Friday ordered the interior ministry to remove name of Hakim Muhammad Akhtar, head of Al-Akhtar Trust from the Exit Control List (ECL).

Hakim Akhtar had filed a petition in the Sindh High Court seeking removal of his name from the ECL.

A two-member bench comprising Chief Justice of the SHC Justice Anwar Jamali and Justice Faisal Arab heard the petition today.

During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel said that United Nations (UN) in a resolution had asked its member countries to take action against people and organizations involved in help of Al-Qaeda. However, Al-Akhtar Trust name was not placed in organizations declared by the UN.

Meanwhile, the government of Pakistan had initiated its own inquiry and put the name of Hakim Akhtar on the ECL, he told the court.
