US senators forge tentative 780-bln-dollar stimulus deal
Updated at: 0421 PST,  Saturday, February 07, 2009
WASHINGTON: US senators on Friday reached tentative agreement on an emergency economic stimulus package worth around 780 billion dollars, after days of intense debate and negotiations, a Senate source said.

The source, who requested anonymity, underlined that the compromise, forged among a small group of moderate Democrats and Republicans, still needed to win approval from the Democratic majority.

News of the agreement, which would sharply cut into what was a 937-billion-dollar package, came as backers of the stimulus plan fretted about meeting US President Barack Obama's self-imposed February 16 deadline.
