Clinton departs on Latin America tour
Updated at: 0527 PST,  Monday, March 01, 2010
WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton left Sunday for a Latin American tour still intending to visit Chile despite a mammoth earthquake there, a top aide said.

Clinton was scheduled to visit Uruguay's capital Montevideo on Monday before traveling to Santiago for talks on Tuesday with Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and president-elect Sebastian Pinera.

"We're still going to Chile as planned, though might change what we do there," according to a senior State Department official who preferred not to be named.

Saturday's quake, in which the toll has now topped 700 dead, comes six weeks after a massive temblor flattened the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince and forced Clinton to call off an Asian tour when she was in Hawaii.
