BEIJING: A 5.0 magnitude earthquake on Thursday struck the region of southwest China devastated last year by a massive quake, the US Geological Survey said, but there were no reports of casualties.

The latest earthquake occurred at 4:25 pm (0825 GMT) about 200 kilometers (124 miles) northeast of the Sichuan provincial capital, Chengdu, it said.

The quake occurred at a depth of just 10 kilometers, the USGS said. China's official news agency also reported the event but its brief dispatch made no mention of any casualties or damage.
