Police had not released names of the victims or a motive, but did say the shooter used two guns, was a family member and was among those dead. Another woman was seriously injured.
The shootings took place late Sunday at a residence in the recently built Rivermark community, home to high-tech workers and other middle- to upper-income families. Santa Clara, a city of 108,000 in Northern California, is about 40 miles (60 kilometers) south of San Francisco.
Santa Clara police lieutenant Phil Cooke said five bodies were found at the home and a sixth person, a young child, died later at a hospital. At least three young children were believed to have been killed in the incident.
"It's horrible. There's really no other way to describe it," Cooke said. "Innocent children are no longer with us."
California has witnessed several murder-suicides involving multiple deaths in recent months. | |
