PONTE VEDRA BEACH: Fourth-seeded Elena Vesnina cruised past weary Melanie Oudin 6-2, 6-1 to reach the semi-finals of the WTA green clay MPS Group Championships.
Oudin, the eighth seed, held serve only once in the second set and committed a bevy of errors as the variety of Vesnina's shots kept her from finding a rhythm.
The match began some 12 hours after Oudin went to bed after a tough, 2 1/2-hour victory over China's Peng Shuai on Thursday night.
"I was pretty exhausted today," Oudin admitted. "We got done about 10 (Thursday) and after I finished doing everything got into bed about 1. ... I guess they could have put me later on today. But, that's the way it goes."
Russia's Vesnina will face top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark in the semi-finals.
Wozniacki made quick work of fifth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, 6-1, 6-3.
In the other quarter-finals, third-seeded Dominika Cibulkova beat sixth-seeded Aleksandra Wozniak 7-5, 6-1, and Olga Govortsova edged Varvara Lepchenko 6-3, 6-2. | |
