Ground made to launch Malakand operation: Fazl
Updated at: 1926 PST,  Tuesday, May 19, 2009
MARDAN: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said Tuesday the Malakand problem could have been resolved amicably. But added that ground was prepared to launch military operation there.

Speaking to newsmen at an aid distribution ceremony here, he said that he was not in favour of enforcing the Sharia by armed struggle. And appealed to those who had taken up arms, to return to peace.

Rehman said that state writ could not be restored through use of military force and bombardment on civilians. Our foreign policy should reflect the national interest, he maintained.

The JUI-F leader said the joint declaration, issued at the end of all parties’ conference, was silent on the Malakand operation. However, an impression was created as if the declaration was unanimously adopted.

On this occasion, JUI Senator Maulana Gul Naseeb stated that there were contradictions in the actions and words of rulers.

He added the JUI-F would continue to provide assistance to the displaced civilians till their return to homes.
