US nuke envoy calls for dialogue with NKorea
Updated at: 0850 PST,  Friday, May 08, 2009
SEOUL: The chief American negotiator for North Korea said Washington is ready to talk directly with Pyongyang as the world struggles to disarm the communist nation and prevent further nuclear tests.

U.S. Special Envoy Stephen Bosworth met with senior Chinese officials Thursday to discuss how to defuse the tensions on the Korean peninsula that spiked last month when the North launched a rocket.

The launch drew condemnation from the U.N. Security Council that in turn prompted North Korea to quit disarmament talks, expel nuclear monitors and threaten to carry out nuclear and missile tests. The North also claimed that it had restarted its Yongbyon nuclear facilities to harvest weapons-grade plutonium.

Bosworth said he had ``very good meetings'' with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Vice Foreign Minister Wu Dawei, China's top North Korean envoy, and discussed the status of the talks and the best way to move forward.
