 Magnitude 7 quake hits off Papua New Guinea

 WASHINGTON: A magnitude 7.0 quake hit off Papua New Guinea's island of New Britain, the U.S. Geological Survey reported on Tuesday.

A magnitude 7 quake can trigger a tsunami but there were noimmediate warnings triggered.

The quake, relatively shallow at a depth of 44.7 miles (72km), struck at 12:19 a.m. local time on Wednesday (1429 GMT on Tuesday), 126 miles (203 km) southeast of Rabaul on New Britain.
