ROME: Russian beach footballers have won the European Cup edging out Portugal 6-4 in the final game played in Rome on Sunday. The competition brought together Europe's eight leading outfits showcasing their skills on a sand at the city's ancient Coliseum circus. The result came as a surprise, with other nations such as hosts Italy, France and finalists Portugal all historical heavyweights on the sandy surface.
But after a tough 36 minutes of action it was the Russians who were celebrating.
The Portuguese outfit, who previously won the trophy for six times – more than any other nation – kept pace with the underdogs right up until the final third.
But Russia’s top man Aleksey Makarov hit a late brace to secure a 6-4 win for his country.
Host nation Italy finished third in the tournament. | |
