Liaquatabad building toll rises to 12
Updated at: 1433 PST,  Wednesday, July 22, 2009
Liaquatabad building toll rises to 12 KARACHI: The death toll in a building collapse in Liaquatabad area rose Wednesday to 12, as the clearance work is still in progress.

A newly constructed five-storey building in Karachi area of Liaquatabad-6 all of a sudden caved in. According to local residents, the building was hitherto uninhabited; however, there were labourers in the building for work and several vendors under the building.

The ambulances of Edhi and Chhipa and KKF arrived on the spot and kick-started the relief activities. However, the narrow streets and crowd put up resistance in the relief activities.

Later on, the Town Administration speeded up the work to remove the debris with heavy machinery. At least 12 bodies and seven injured people were recovered from under the rubble and rushed to hospital.

The work for clearance of rubble is in progress.
