Updated at: 1144 PST,  Saturday, July 05, 2008
Afghan MP shot dead in Kandahar KANDAHAR: Unidentified gunmen have shot dead a member of Afghanistan's parliament in the troubled southern province of Kandahar, a district governor told foreign news agency Saturday.

"Habibullah Jan was shot dead by unknown gunmen while going home" on Friday evening, said Niaz Mohammad Sarhadi, governor of Zharai district where the MP was killed.

The official did not say who might have been behind the killing but similar incidents have been blamed on Taliban insurgents for whom Kandahar is a former stronghold.
