Updated at: 0744 PST,  Monday, August 10, 2009
Rehman Dakait killed in Karachi encounter KARACHI: The main character of the Lyari gang war — Rehman Baloch alias Rehman Dakait — and his three accomplices were killed in an encounter with the police in Steel Town here late on Sunday night, police said.

SP Investigations, East Zone, Chaudhry Aslam, had received a tip-off that Rehman Dakait, along with his three associates, was coming to Karachi from Hyderabad through the Link Road in Steel Town. The police took positions there and a shootout took place when the gangsters arrived. As a result, Rehman Dakait and his three associates – Nazir alias Palla, Aurangzaib alias Babu and Aqil – were injured. They were later shifted to the Jinnah Hospital where they succumbed to their injuries.

Three Kalashnikovs rifles and three hand grenades were recovered from the spot. Rehman Dakait was wanted by the police in over 300 cases of murder, kidnappings for ransom, diesel smuggling, etc. His name was included in the CID’s Red Book and he had a head money of Rs 5 million.

Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Waseem Ahmed said the man killed was Rehman Dakait, who had been shot dead in an encounter with the Bin Qasim police. The bodies of Rehman Dakait and others had been shifted to the Jinnah Post-Graduate Medical Centre, the CCPO said.

Besides, the police had set Rs 5 million bounty over his head, the senior policeman said. The CCPO said large contingents of police and rangers had been deployed in Lyari to avoid any untoward incident following the killing of Rehman Dakait.

The Sindh government had launched an operation against his gang, which came out virtually unscathed by the last operation in the area compared to its rival group. Over 250 families had to leave Lyari due to the gang war between the groups of Rehman Dakait and Arshad Pappu.
