| GEO World | Former Bin Laden cook gets 14 years at Gitmo | Updated at: 0320 PST, Thursday, August 12, 2010 US NAVAL BASE AT GUANTANAMO BAY: A Guantanamo Bay military jury Wednesday sentenced Ibrahim al-Qosi, a one-time cook for Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, to 14 years in prison.
The 51-year-old Qosi, from Sudan, is the first detainee to be sentenced by a Guantanamo Bay military tribunal since President Barack Obama took office and pledged to shutter the controversial facility.
The 10-member jury spent a little more than an hour deliberating before reaching a decision on the sentence, which must now be approved by a top official at the Pentagon.
Qosi pleaded guilty in July to material support to terrorism, a charge both prosecution and defense agreed carried a sentence of between 12-15 years.
But he has also hammered out a plea deal with prosecutors that includes stipulations on how long a sentence he should serve. The details of the deal have not been made public. |  | | | |
