Updated at: 2208 PST,  Tuesday, August 18, 2009
Shehbaz directs to bring sugar in open market LAHORE: Chief Minister of Punjab Shehbaz Sharif Tuesday directed the concerned authorities to immediately bring the impounded sugar in Ramazan bazaars and other markets.

He said the rights of general consumers would be protected fully. He issued theses orders in a meeting held to review the ongoing campaign against the sugar hoarders.

Chief Minister ordered not to harass the small shopkeepers, adding however no leniency will be offered to hoarders.

He said the government had to launch crackdown and he will himself take on the spot action.

Meanwhile, Food Department officials told the CM the sugar crisis took place due to bookmaking and after the crackdown, the punters cancelled their deals and returned the tokens.

According to the officials, more than one million tonnes of sugar has so far been impounded from the hoarders.
