ISLAMABAD: A committee of Pakistani senators on Thursday said the country's cricket chief was guilty of insulting parliament and its members, demanding his dismissal.
The privilege committee from the upper house took up two motions against Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ijaz Butt and found him guilty of breaching lawmakers' privilege, or insulting them.
The 72-year-old Butt has come under tremendous pressure from both houses of parliament since President Asif Ali Zardari appointed him in October 2008.
"The committee found Butt guilty of breaching the privilege of the parliament and its members," said Senator Tahir Mashidi.
"The committee has recommended the PCB patron (Zardari) to remove Butt immediately," said Mashidi.
"Butt in a statement reported in the media had called the committee powerless and boasted that he could do anything he wants as he was appointed by President Zardari, who is also the patron of the PCB," Mashidi added.
Last week, the head of the sports committee of the National Assembly, Iqbal Mohammad Ali, wrote a letter to Zardari to remove Butt, who he felt was responsible for the continued deterioration of the game in the country.
"We hope that a democratically appointed president of Pakistan will take proper action," Mashidi added, saying "his time for mercy is over".
There have been repeated calls from lawmakers and former players to remove Butt, but Zardari has taken no action.
Former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas last week accused Butt of destroying the game and also demanded his removal. |  | | | |
