Updated at: 0103 PST,  Thursday, August 28, 2008
Hockey coach steps down in wake of team’s poor show LAHORE: Pakistan hockey teams coach, Naveed Alam stepped down in the wake of team’s poor eighth position in Beijing Olympics.

“ I take full responsibility of team’s failure and I am sorry for its dismal performance in the mega event in China “, he told reporters at a news conference here on Wednesday.

Naveed said he is not going to blame anyone or Pakistan Hockey Federation but himself for team’s debacle in Beijing where it failed right from the start after losing to England.

Naveed a former Olympian read out some statistics to highlight the overall performance of the team in the six matches in which it faced four defeats at the hands of England, Australia, Germany, and New Zealand, winning against lowly ranked Canada and South Africa.

Naveed who managed the team for six months till Olympics said the team did not get a fair deal at the hands of technical officials in the Olympics where Pakistani players were heavily penalized for minor mistakes or offenses and on the other hand the European and other teams were dealt in different manner.

He said he is leaving with lasting memories and his services are always available for the cause of the team.

He urged the PHF to have maximum representation in Games ruling Body to safeguard the interest of the Pak team and to ensure that it is treated at par with other participating teams.
