 Curfew further intensified in Srinagar
Updated at: 1915 PST,  Friday, August 29, 2008
Curfew further intensified in Srinagar SRINAGAR: Indian security forces have intensified the crackdown against Muslim protestors in Srinagar where a strict curfew has been imposed.

Heavy police and paramilitary presence is visible in the streets of Srinagar where Friday prayers could not performed in any mosque due to the curfew.

The Indian police has also arrested All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Shabbir Ahmed Shah from Alamdar Colony and shifted him to an undisclosed location.

The police has already taken into custody Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, Muhammad Yasin Malik, Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai besides a female leader Asia Andrabi and hundreds of workers and leaders.

Spokesman of Jammu and Kashmir Coordination Committee, Musarrat Alam Butt has appealed to the international community to ensure the protection of the detained leaders “whose lives are in danger”.

Some of the largest anti-India protests in recent history have taken place over the last month, triggered by the Indian government's plan to donate Srinagar land to a Hindu shrine.
