Updated at: 1001 PST,  Friday, September 19, 2008
Mexican jail riots leave 23 dead MEXICO CITY: At least 23 people have been killed in ongoing riots at a prison in Mexico.

According to a Human Right Inspector, riots set off by the death of a prisoner, allegedly at the hands of prison guards.

The death toll has risen to 23 in ongoing riots in Tijuana jail while another 12 people were injured when violence broke out at the La Mesa prison in Tijuana, near the US border.

Family members were quoted as saying inmates were protesting at their treatment since a riot on Sunday that led to at least three inmates' deaths.

The jail authorities said they had regained control of the prison after shifting about 200 inmates to other jails following Wednesday's riot.
