MADRID: Rafael Nadal ensured Spain advanced to its sixth Davis Cup final by beating Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-0, 6-4 Sundayin a 4-1 semifinal victory over 2007 champion United States.
The top-ranked Nadal broke Roddick five times, saved all seven break points and served eight aces on the clay at Las Ventas bullfighting arena.
Spain will play for the title against Argentina or Russia. That semifinal, being played in Buenos Aires, is tied 2-2.
Nadal clinched the win on his sixth match point by slicing a backhand winner across court from deep behind the baseline.
“It's one of the nicest sensations you can experience in your career,'' said Nadal, who dropped to his knees and pumped his fists after the victory.
“It was one of my most emotional matches in the past few months. A weekend to remember.''
Nadal also beat Roddick in the 2004 final at Seville to help Spain secure its second Davis Cup title. |  |
