Updated at: 0906 PST,  Wednesday, September 22, 2010
Dogs hit the waves in surfing contest NEW YORK: The Second Annual Surf City Surf Dog competition at Huntington Beach in Southern California on Sunday showcased dogs hitting the waves and 'hanging 20.'

The event, which raised money for animal organizations, included the surfing competition, a one-mile walk and a costume contest.

The surfing event was held in two categories: GROMS, which involved small, medium, large or extra large dog surfing heats, and SHREDDER, where dogs were judged on the length of their ride, the size of the wave and their confidence on the board according to The Sacramento Bee.

According SurfCitySurfDog , the event's organizers, awards were to be given out for the top three places, as well as "Best Trick," "Best Wipeout," and "Best Crowd Pleaser."

Hanzo, 2-year-old boxer usually seen riding a skateboard down Los Angeles' Hollywood Boulevard, won the large-dog surf category, according to a news channel.

"At 8 weeks old, he was putting his feet on the skateboard," owner Eric Felland, of Hollywood, told ESPN. "He just wants to own the board."
