CWG: Pak convoy to leave for India today

Updated at: 1354 PST,  Wednesday, September 29, 2010
CWG: Pak convoy to leave for India today KARACHI: An initial convoy of 54 Pakistani athletes will leave for New Delhi today to take part in Commonwealth Games, Geo News reported Wednesday.

Pakistan is taking part in only 8 out of 17 events of the Games starting from October 3.

Sindh Sports Minister Dr Muhammed Shah will leave for New Delhi on Saturday.

Pakistan is not participating in swimming and athletics competitions. At least 10,000 athletes of 71 countries will be in action in these games vying for over 1400 medals.

It should be mentioned here that Pakistan showed its best in 1962 Games in Perth, when it grabbed eight gold medals.

The Games are being held in New Delhi amid security concerns. However, after a three-member delegation went to India to assess the concerns and gave the security clearance, the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) President Arif Hasan said that the situation was satisfactory.

A total of 75 athletes are participating in the Commonwealth Games from Pakistan in eight disciplines including hockey, tennis, boxing, weightlifting, wrestling, shooting, squash and Paralympics. “A total of 54-members, including officials will leave today while the shooting team and remaining squad will head off on October 2,” said Hasan.
