Singh Demands End to Violence in India's Orissa
Updated at: 0229 PST,  Friday, September 05, 2008
Singh Demands End to Violence in India BLOOMBERG: Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanded authorities in the eastern state of Orissa to stop communal violence between Hindus and Christians that has killed at least 16 people.

“The central government is deeply concerned at the situation,'' he told Sister Nirmala, who heads the Missionaries of Charity group founded by Mother Teresa, according to a statement from his office yesterday. “It is highly unfortunate that so much violence has taken place.''

The fighting in Kandhamal and other districts erupted after Hindu leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati and four other people were killed Aug. 23. Police imposed a curfew after a mob torched an orphanage run by the church two days later, killing a woman.
