KARACHI: The operation against criminal elements in Lyari has entered its eighth day as clashes between security forces and criminals continued on Friday.
The South Zone policemen have also arrived in the area to assist in the on-going operation., Geo News reported.
According to police, the operation is being conducted against the criminal elements in Lyari that has entered its 8th day today, but so far no major progress has been reported as criminals are using latest weapons including hand grenades and rocket launchers against security personnel.
Police is facing severe resistance in the on-going battle that has claimed more than 27 lives including policemen while more than 60 have been wounded so far.
As the situation deteriorated in the area, local residents were forced to migrate to safer areas.
Police have claimed that they have taken control of several areas despite resistance at Afshani Gali, Gabol Park and some other areas where they could not advance.
Protesters demonstrated against the operation in Lyari in several areas on Thursday and demanded to end the combat.
Inspector General (IG) Sindh police Mushtaq Shah addressed a press conference at Central Police Office in Karachi on Thursday and told that Lyari operation was in its final stages and could end today. He told said that Rangers were with them and could be called any time.
He told that the Taliban along with other criminals were involved in Lyari clashes.
During operation by the Crime Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday night, two alleged criminals were also killed who were identified as Junaid and Sheraz. Arms were also recovered from their possession that included two Kalashnikovs, bullets and a wireless set.
