PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has requested the federal government to take Dr. Shakil Afridi into their custody.

The provincial government claims that protecting Dr. Afridi is a difficult task and he faces threats to his life while at the Peshawar Central Jail.

On Tuesday an intelligence report submitted to the provincial government claimed that there were inmates at the Peshawar Central Jail who have negative sentiments towards Dr .Afridi and may try to hurt him. In reaction Chief Minister Amir Haider Hoti issued orders to provide security to Dr. Afridi equivalent to a high profile detainee.

It has also been reported that the Pakistani doctor sentenced to 33 years by a tribal court in Khyber Agency for treason may be shifted to Attock Fort.

Dr. Afridi had informed Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) about the presence of al Qaeda leader, Osama Bin Laden in Abbottabad.

Owing to this information, the US attacked the compound of Bin Laden in Abbottabad and killed him on May 2, 2011.
