LONDON: The Olympic cauldron was lit by seven young British athletes early Saturday to mark the start of the 30th Olympic Games.

Queen Elizabeth II had opened the Games, which will feature over 10,000 athletes from 205 countries and run until August 12, during a colourful opening ceremony which celebrated British history, culture and eccentricity.

"I declare open the Games of London, celebrating the 30th Olympiad of the modern era," said the monarch. (AFP)
