Iftikhar Chaudhry writes letter to CJ over Thar situation
ISLAMABAD: Former Supreme Court chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry who took scores of suo motu notices in cases of public interest, has written a letter to his successor in the country’s top court Chief Justie Tassaduq Hussain Jillani to take notice of famine like situation in Sindh’s Thar district.

Justice retired Chaudhry in his letter written on Friday, requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice of famine like situation which led to severe drought in the remote Sindh district and devoured almost 32 malnourished children. However, according to latest media reports as many 121 children have died so far.

“The situation is tantamount to denial of fundamental rights of citizens of Tharparker under Article 9 & 14 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, 1973 as
according to Print and Electronic Media no adequate arrangements have been made to save the lives of human beings as well as live stock,” he wrote.

The letter said: “The honorable Supreme Court may examine to initiate proceeding to enforce fundamental rights of a large number of public of district Tharparker under Article 184(3) of the Constitution”

Under justice Chaudhry, the Human Rights Cell of the Supreme Court of Pakistan had become center of judicial activism, receiving a large number of complaints from victims
