Pakistan to participate in World Youth Scrabble Championship
ISLAMABAD: Defending Champions Pakistan will participate in the 9th World Youth Scrabble Championship (WYSC) to be played at Colombo Sri Lanka from August 29 to 31.

A Pakistan Scrabble Association official told APP that Moiz Ullah Baig is the reigning world youth champion and a favorite to retain the title this year.

“We are hoping that Moiz will become the first player in history to win the WYSC twice”, he said.

He said the team is selected after a grueling selection process lasting months. It is completely transparent and the only criterion is merit he said.

He said a group of 40 young players were selected based on their performance at annual inter school championship held in February. These players were trained by seasoned players for several months. Finally the team was selected through a multi stage qualifying tournament he said.

He said Pakistan s performance at the last WYSC was record breaking apart from the winner the runner up was also from Pakistan.

In fact 8 players from Pakistan finished in the top 20 out of 136 players which is the best performance by any country in the history of WYSC he said.

The team comprises Moiz Ullah Baig Arham Abidi Ahmad Abdullah Abbasi Bisma Fatima Mariam Arif Hassan Hadi Khan Hammad Hadi Khan Hasham Hadi Khan Absar Mustajab Talha Arif Hiba Saad Abbas Shabbir and Muhammad Affan. (APP)
