ISLAMABAD: A report of Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) presented to the Ministry of Interior reveals that gold worth Rs35 billion was smuggled out of the country in one year.

The report says the gold was smuggled from Karachi with the help of fake customs documents and that jewelers from Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore were involved in the crime.

It says gold worth Rs35 billion was smuggled out of Pakistan in one year between 2010 and 2011.

The report also says that four suspects had been arrested on charges of involvement in the crime and an investigation is underway to ascertain whether the money involved in the illegal transaction was used in Hundi or in financing terrorism.

Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was briefed that the jewelers had threatened with strike over the arrest of the accused.
