KARACHI: The Rangers raided the residence of Citizen-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) Chief Ahmed Chinoy early on Tuesday morning.

Chinoy is accused of mishandling a kidnapping for ransom case. A young man was kidnapped from the New Karachi area of the city. Parents of the victim separately approached CPLC and the Rangers Special Task Force and both forces began working to solve the case.

While the victim was rescued by the Rangers, it was later alleged that Ahmed Chinoy mishandled the case and kept the mother of the victim waiting at the CPLC office even after her son was rescued by law enforcers.

Rangers raided the house of the CPLC chief on the complaint of the victim's mother that he had mishandled the case.

A spokesman for the Rangers said the Special Task Force conducted a raid in the Sohrab Goth area of the city on Monday night and recovered the 24-year-old kidnapping victim. The spokesman added the kidnappers had demanded Rs 2 million for his release.

Chinoy has dismissed these allegations terming them baseless. He said that Rangers did come to his house at 5:30 AM and left after meeting him for 15 minutes. He clarified that his house was not raided and therefore the incident should not be termed as such.

He further said that he was not present during this case and had left his office early on Monday. “I was not present nor was the mother of the victim kept at CPLC House,” Chinoy said while speaking to Geo News.

Chinoy denied allegations that the raiding party recovered Rs 1.5 million from his residence, nor was the victim recovered from his residence. He clarified that there were some misunderstandings which he has clarified. “I do not know who has leveled allegations of the money and victim being recovered from my house,” Chinoy added.

“This misunderstanding has been spread by the head of the Rangers Special Task Force,” Chinoy claimed.

Chinoy further said that he had met with DG Rangers to clarify this issue. “I discussed efforts to increase coordination between CPLC and Rangers during my meeting with DG Rangers.”

According to Chinoy he was ready to cooperate in any investigation relating to this case.

Meanwhile, Additional IGP Ghulam Qadir Thebo said he was unaware of the raid at Chinoy’s residence nor had he received any complaints pertaining to this matter.

Later, speaking at a press conference, CPLC chief Ahmed Chinoy said that the Rangers officials visited his residence to share information regarding the case.

He said that a conspiracy was hatched to malign the organisation. There was a third element, which fabricated information such as recovery of some cash and the recovered youth’s mother from his residence.

CPLC does not establish contact with abductors and only family of the kidnapped is supposed to do that, Chinoy added.

He said that the kidnapping ring would be arrested soon.
