ECP rejects demands for resignation of members

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday rejected demands for the resignations of its members after a judicial inquiry commission’s report found serious irregularities in the way it conducted the 2013 general elections.

The commission has previously made it clear that none of its members would resign from their posts on anyone's wishes, said a spokesman for the ECP.

On Tuesday, Leader of Opposition in National Assembly and Pakistan People's Party (PPP) leader Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah echoed an earlier demand from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan calling on the ECP members to step down from their positions.

Speaking to reporters after presiding over a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee, Shah said that said that ECP members would have to make a decision themselves of their fate after the damning report by the judicial commission enlisted deficiencies of the electoral body.

But a spokesman for the ECP rejected Shah's demand today, saying that its members would not resign and would complete their terms in office.

He said that ECP members can be removed using Article 208 of the Constitution.
