Pakistan committed for Geeta’s return as India accepts her as its citizen

ISLAMABAD: The foreign office on Thursday said that Pakistan is committed and fully cooperating with the Indian High Commission for the return of Geeta, a deaf-mute girl who inadvertently entered the Pakistani territory 13 years ago.

In a statement issued here today, the foreign office said no condition has been set for Geeta in obtaining permission to travel back to India.

“The foreign office is in contact with the Indian High Commission in this regard, however, it is responsibility of the Indian side to prepare travel documents for the girl,” said the statement.

The Indian government has informed the Pakistan’s foreign office in writing that the country has accepted Geeta as its citizen, said Faisal Edhi, the son of famous Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi.

Since stumbling into Pakistan, Geeta has lived in a home for lost and abandoned children of Abdul Sattar Edhi in Karachi.

The foreign office is likely to hold Geeta’s interview in Islamabad soon as her traveling documents have been prepared by India, which has requested the Pakistani authorities to grant her the visa.

It is highly likely that Geeta might leave for her home country by next month.
