All set for first ever LG polls in Islamabad on Monday
ISLAMABAD: Elaborate arrangements have been made to ensure security and maintenance of law and order for the first-ever Local Government elections in the federal capital to be held on Monday.

Polling will begin at 7:00 in the morning and will continue till 5:30 in the evening without break, Radio Pakistan reported.

Over 2,400 candidates are in the fray for the slots of chairman, vice chairman and councillors. There are over 676,000 registered voters in the Islamabad Capital Territory.

According to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Army, Rangers and FC soldiers have been deployed to assist the Police.

About 625 Army troops and 700 Rangers and 1,000 FC personnel have been called for maintaining law and order in an around the polling stations.

As per the security plan, one Rangers personnel and 15 police officials would be deployed at the most sensitive polling stations.

Similarly, seven police officials would perform duties at each sensitive polling station. Five police personnel would be deployed at each of the remaining polling stations.

According to the Election Commission, Army would also be available as Quick Response Force.

The Election Commission has also decided to depute Rangers at most sensitive polling stations during Local Government elections in Islamabad.

According to an ECP spokesman, Rangers personnel, Pakistan Army and police workforce will be deployed in 50 union councils of the Federal Capital to maintain peace.

The spokesman said the ECP had given powers of first class magistrate to presiding officers for conducting fair elections.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has set up a Control Room to receive complaints during the Local Government Elections on telephone numbers: 051-9210816, 051-9210817 and 051-9210818.

Written complaints can be made through Fax numbers: 051-9210819 and 051-9210820.

The Federal government has announced that all the departments, including Secretariat offices within Islamabad Capital Territory, shall be closed at 2.00 pm tomorrow.

The decision has been taken to enable the employees to cast their votes in connection with the Local Bodies polls.
