Aliya Ney Pakistan Choor Diya?
The series begins with a realization that loving Pakistan while living in it seems to be an increasingly difficult objective to achieve. Aliya decides to leave Pakistan not only because it seems hard to attain one’s goals in the country but also with a hope that life outside the country may help her see Pakistan in a new light.
London is the chosen destination. And this is where she must come to terms with her multiple identities: being a Pakistani, Muslim, woman. While doing so, Aliya meets and talks to many other Pakistanis and Muslims living in the UK, entering parts of their lives, understanding what it means to make a home away from home itself. And at the same time, understands what makes values, institutions, freedoms and people define other (western) societies.
The ultimate question: Do you learn more about your country and your identity when you step away from it?
Some interesting aspects of the show are:
1) An international production crew: The show is shot and edited by an Italian Cameraperson and editor, Niccolo Piazza, with additional camera work by British, Arab and American crew.
2) Production Values: The entire series is shot on HD and is based mainly on outdoor locations, showing various parts of London, tightly edited to musical montages and interviews. The show travels to other locations outside London such as Oxford, Manchester and Bradford and a special episode filmed in New York.
3) Original music score: For most episodes all music (underlay and overlay) are originally composed by Abdullah Chhadeh, a Syrian musician based in London
4) The mood and conversations in the show are very informal and informative, confessional and honest. The array of guests includes great variety: from family members, friends, successful businessmen, housewives, members of the Parliament and House of Lords, famous writers, academics, imams of mosques, people who are struggling to make it abroad, those who regret the decision to leave and those who would never go back home.
